Broadcast journalist and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Asante Akim South Constituency Communications Officer, Richard Nana Basoah, popularly known as “Papa Rich,” has been released from the custody of the National Signals Bureau (NSB).
Mr. Basoah, who hosts the evening drive-time programme on Ahwenepa 95.5 FM, was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, shortly after concluding his show at the station’s premises in Juaso, in the Asante Akim South Municipality.
According to reports from Ahwenepa FM, he was picked up by a group of armed men who arrived at the station in two black Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles. The individuals were later identified as operatives of the National Signals Bureau.
His detention sparked concern among party supporters, media practitioners and other stakeholders, who called for clarity on the circumstances surrounding his arrest and his whereabouts.
Mr. Basoah’s release followed sustained interventions by the leadership of the NPP, his legal representatives and other individuals who engaged the relevant authorities to ensure due process.
Those involved in securing his release included Prof. Lawyer Ken Attafuah and Mrs. Joyce Attafuah, directors of Ahwenepa 95.5 FM; former Ghana Post Managing Director Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as Obour; and Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa.
A statement from the station said Mr. Basoah had been directed to report to the National Signals Bureau on Thursday, August 6, 2026, to continue with further processes, accompanied by his legal team.
Management of Ahwenepa FM expressed appreciation to supporters, party members, colleagues, family members and the general public for their prayers and support throughout the period.
The station added that further updates would be provided as verified information becomes available.
