NPP can only win Akwatia by-election with Ama Sey – Some constituents

A section of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members and sympathisers in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region are rallying behind former MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as “Ama Sey,” as their preferred candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The constituents believe Ama Sey is best positioned to succeed the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, and help the party retain the seat.

They have, therefore, appealed to the NPP leadership to exercise prudence in selecting a candidate to represent the party.

Mr. Kumi, who was serving his first term, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness. The seat is yet to be declared vacant as the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, awaits formal communication from the bereaved family before the Clerk can notify the Electoral Commission.

Speaking to Adom News, Fredrick Kwame Gyekye, Campaign Coordinator for Ama Sey, thanked constituents for recognising the achievements of the former MP. He described her as the most popular and influential political figure in the area and reaffirmed that she remains the party’s strongest contender for victory.

Mr. Gyekye cited her record of development and support for entrepreneurship during her tenure as MP, which, he said, have endeared her to the people and intensified calls for her return.

“Despite other potential contestants, Ama Sey is the clear choice for the NPP to retain the seat,” he said, urging the party’s leadership to heed the calls from the grassroots.

Ama Sey is credited with defeating National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Baba Jamal in the 2016 general election. However, she narrowly lost the NPP parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2020 elections to the late Mr. Kumi by just four votes. She contested again in the 2023 primaries but lost to him a second time.
