A delegation from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), led by Chief Executive Officer Edudzi Tameklo, on Thursday, January 15, visited the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to assess progress following the Authority’s approval for the refinery to resume full operations.

During the visit, the delegation toured key operational facilities to verify compliance with regulatory requirements and evaluate operational efficiency.

The Managing Director of TOR, Edmond Kombat, expressed appreciation for the NPA’s continued support, noting that improved management practices have resulted in fully stocked storage tanks—an indication of enhanced operational performance.

Commending the leadership and workforce of the refinery, Mr Tameklo reaffirmed his commitment to supporting TOR’s operations.

“I will be the number one champion for the need to support TOR, because if TOR is working, it makes my work easier,” he said.

Drawing lessons from a recent visit to the Dangote Refinery, Mr Tameklo highlighted the importance of scale, efficiency, modernisation, and automation in refinery operations.

“No one should be sent to go and turn a valve,” he added.

He further stressed the shared responsibility between the NPA and TOR to protect the integrity of the plant.

“We must ensure that we do not say ‘proceed’ when what is required is ‘stop work’, because the integrity of the plant must not be compromised,” he stated.

Mr Tameklo noted that the revival of TOR has far-reaching implications for Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector, including improved price stability and significant foreign exchange savings through reduced reliance on imported petroleum products.

The visit concluded with a final inspection of the facility, which confirmed that TOR is operational and fully compliant with regulatory standards.

Management of the Tema Oil Refinery expressed gratitude to Mr Tameklo and the NPA for their support, describing it as critical to the refinery’s successful return to full operations.
