The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured Ghanaians that there will be no military deployment for the rerun of elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency today, Friday, July 11.
His statement comes in response to concerns raised following the Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct a rerun in 19 polling stations within the constituency.
Dr. Boamah made the announcement via his official Facebook page, emphasising the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and upholding democratic integrity.
“To ensure a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will be fully in charge of security for today’s elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency,” the Defence Minister stated.
He stressed emphatically that “there will be no military deployment,” a message he repeated three times in his post to reassure the public and allay fears of potential intimidation or violence.
Dr. Boamah referenced past electoral incidents, including the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence and the tragic killing of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 general elections, as cautionary tales.
“Let’s learn from past experiences… and prioritise citizen safety and security,” he urged, underscoring the importance of avoiding past mistakes while upholding democratic values.
He further expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service’s ability to manage the electoral process peacefully.
“The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to do their job,” he affirmed.
Dr. Boamah concluded his message with a call for calm and active participation, encouraging voters to “keep the peace and make our voices heard as John Dramani Mahama resets Ghana and creates more opportunities for Ghanaians.”
