No gov’t official involved in galamsey – Beatrice Annan

-

Presidential Staffer and legal practitioner, Beatrice Annan, has dismissed claims that some government officials are engaged in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Madam Annan refuted the allegations made by some opposition figures and individuals, insisting that no appointee of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration is involved in the activity.

According to her, the President remains firm in his stance against illegal mining and will not hesitate to act against any appointee found culpable.

“President Mahama is fully committed to the fight against galamsey. He will not sit back and allow his appointees to engage in it. Anyone found guilty will be dealt with accordingly,” she stressed.

Madam Annan added that Ghanaians are beginning to see the impact of government’s interventions in curbing illegal mining, pointing to improvements in the turbidity levels of key water bodies.

“We are seeing positive results. The turbidity levels of some rivers, such as River Bia at Dadieso and rivers in Ellembelle, are improving. But we won’t rate ourselves until these water bodies are fully restored,” she explained.

She further criticised the previous administration, alleging that there was little to no action taken to address illegal mining between 2023 and January 2025.

“Let’s be bold to name and shame politicians involved in galamsey, whether from the NPP or NDC, and stop politicising the issue,” she urged.

Madam Annan reiterated that the government remains resolute in enforcing its anti-galamsey measures and will continue working to ensure Ghana’s natural resources are protected.
