Nkwanta conflict: Persons with disabilities advocate for lasting peace

Persons with disabilities in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region are advocating for lasting peace to promote socio-economic development.

They express that the ongoing conflict has placed a significant burden on vulnerable populations, particularly persons with disabilities, who are unable to flee to safety.

They made remarks when the Nkwanta South Assembly donated start-up kits, which include fufu pounding machines, refrigerators, and cash to support over 100 persons with disabilities.

In an interview with Adom News, Evans Boanya, the President of the Ghana Federation of Disability in Nkwanta South, emphasised the urgent need for the conflicting parties to lay down their arms and engage in peace negotiations.

He noted that the conflict has caused untold hardship for persons with disabilities in the municipality.

The president highlighted that many individuals with disabilities who run businesses and participate in other activities have lost everything due to the conflict.

He also urged the government and security agencies to reconsider the curfew hours imposed in the municipality to help restore normalcy.

Adom News spoke to several members of the federation, who echoed their challenges related to the ongoing conflict.

They called on authorities to take immediate steps to resolve the situation, which would allow businesses and other activities to thrive once more.

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, urged the people of Nkwanta South to embrace peace, noting that the development of the Oti Region hinges on the stability of Nkwanta.

He stated that the area has lost several crucial developmental projects, including a cassava processing factory and a technical university, which were intended to transform the region.

The minister therefore encouraged the community to accept peace and to consider a potential review of the curfew.
