The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian national, Esther Obasi, following the circulation of viral videos in which she was seen wearing Ghana Police camouflage and the standard black police uniform.
According to the police, she is currently in custody and assisting with investigations, and is expected to be put before court for prosecution in due course.
The videos sparked widespread public outrage, raising concerns about the unauthorised use of police uniforms and the impersonation of law enforcement officers.
Police investigations led by the Inspector-General’s Special Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) traced the suspect to the Prestea area in the Western Region, where she was subsequently arrested.
The Service also disclosed that internal inquiries have identified the police officer whose uniform was used. “Investigation by the team tracked the suspect to Prestea area in the Western Region of Ghana, leading to her arrest,” the statement said, adding that “the police officer whose uniform was used was also identified and will be dealt with internally.”
The Ghana Police Service has further cautioned the public against the misuse of police uniforms, warning that anyone found culpable will face strict legal consequences.
