Nico Williams has hailed the influence of his elder brother, Iñaki Williams, describing him as the ideal choice to lead Athletic Club as captain.
Ahead of the 2025/26 La Liga season, Athletic Club officially confirmed Ghana international Iñaki Williams as the new team captain, succeeding veteran defender Óscar De Marcos.
Following the announcement—and after committing his own long-term future to the club—Nico expressed deep admiration for Iñaki’s leadership qualities.
“We have both always dreamed of this moment. My brother is a reference point for everyone, and above all, for me,” the 22-year-old said.
“I think he’s the best man to be captain. I’m looking forward to seeing him wear the armband for a long time,” he added.
Nico also revealed their shared ambition to make a mark in the UEFA Champions League this season while continuing to build their legacy at San Mamés.
“We have very ambitious goals, such as the Champions League. What better way to pursue them than with the club of my life? I want to keep making history here at San Mamés—with the fans and with my family,” he stated.
Athletic Club will kick off their La Liga season at home against Sevilla, with the Williams brothers set to play pivotal roles in the campaign.
