NIA reacts to viral extortion claim, launches internal investigation

-

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed allegations made in a viral TikTok video by an individual known as “Sefwi Biggest Trapper,” who claimed that officers at the Bono Premium Centre extorted money from him and other applicants.

In a statement released on Sunday, November 16, 2025, the Authority expressed serious concern over the video and condemned the individual’s behaviour during his visit to the centre on November 11, describing it as disruptive and unsafe for others present.

Despite the disturbance, Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku and NIA management reaffirmed their strict stance against extortion and misconduct at all centres.

The Authority added that attempts to contact the accuser and his companion, identified as Appiah Comfort, have been unsuccessful. The matter has therefore been handed over to NIA’s Internal CID for a thorough and independent inquiry.

Following the incident, management has begun implementing additional security measures across NIA centres to safeguard staff and applicants.

The NIA also urged the individual to submit any evidence he claims to have, stressing that any staff member found guilty will face the necessary disciplinary or legal consequences.

The Authority used the statement to clarify its official service charges. At Premium Centres, first-time registration costs GH¢310, updating personal details costs GH¢355, and card replacement attracts a fee of GH¢420. At District Offices, first-time registration is free, updating information costs GH¢60, and replacing a lost or damaged card costs GH¢125.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the NIA encouraged the public to channel genuine concerns through its official numbers or via email at info@nia.gov.gh.
