The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has expressed deep sorrow over a violent attack on its district office in Garu, Upper East Region, which left four people dead and five others injured.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 21, NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, described the incident as a “tragic and unfortunate act of violence” and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
According to police reports, unidentified gunmen on motorbikes stormed the NHIA office on Monday, October 20, and opened fire indiscriminately on staff and bystanders.
“We are profoundly saddened that such an incident occurred at a facility dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of the public,” the NHIA stated.
“We denounce this act and are working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”
A management team has been dispatched to Garu to support the bereaved families, the injured, and affected NHIA staff.
The Authority has also begun reviewing its security protocols across all regional and district offices to enhance the safety of its personnel and clients.
The NHIA urged calm among staff and the public as investigations continue, reaffirming that “the safety and wellbeing of our staff and clients remain a top priority.”
The statement concluded with a call for solidarity and prayers for the victims. “May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
