Mining giant Newmont has denied claims that its operations are responsible for the reported pollution of the River Tano in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

In a statement issued on January 19, 2026, the company said reports linking the pollution to its Ahafo North mine are misleading and unfounded.

Newmont confirmed it is cooperating with relevant stakeholders to investigate the matter, including field visits, interviews, and reviews of environmental management practices.

A joint investigation by the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has so far found no evidence linking the company’s operations to the river pollution.

The company added that a separate field visit by youth leaders and assembly members from host communities also found no impact from its activities on the Tano River.

Newmont emphasized that it adheres to the highest environmental and water management standards, often exceeding regulatory requirements, and reaffirmed its commitment to responsible and sustainable mining in the Tano North Municipality.
