Newmont Ahafo South Mines has stepped up efforts to strengthen its relationship with residents of the five communities within its operational area in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.

As part of this initiative, the company organised a three-day football tournament in Kenyasi for male and female teams drawn from Kenyasi No.1, Kenyasi No.2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso.

Speaking to Adom News, Owusu Nkrumah Ababio, Team Lead for Social Responsibility at Newmont Ahafo South Mines, noted that some youth feel the company is not doing enough to support their livelihoods—a perception that has, at times, led to protests and picketing against the company.

He explained that management is exploring various ways to ensure community members benefit meaningfully from the company’s operations. He said the football tournament was designed to identify and support talented footballers who could advance to higher levels in the sport.

The District Chief Executive for Asutifi North, Hafiz Dauda, commended Newmont for the initiative, describing it as a positive step towards supporting talented but needy youth in the area. He assured that the district assembly would work to promote cordial relations between the company and host communities, particularly the youth, to drive development.

At the conclusion of the tournament, participating teams received cash prizes, jerseys, footballs, and trophies. Ntotroso emerged as winners in the male category, while Kenyasi No.1 claimed victory in the female competition.
