Nayiri Palace makes strong demands amidst Nalerigu curfew

The Mamprusi Traditional Council has strongly condemned the government’s decision to impose a curfew on Nalerigu and surrounding areas, describing it as arbitrary, unjustified, and a direct affront to the authority of the Nayiri.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 28, 2025, the Council demanded the immediate lifting of the curfew, a full and transparent investigation into the recent killings, and justice for the victims. It also called for an unreserved apology to the Nayiri and the people of Mamprugu for what it described as a disregard for traditional authority.

The curfew, which restricts movement from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, took effect on July 27 following the killing of two students at Nalerigu Senior High School by unidentified gunmen. While the motive remains unknown, speculation suggests it could be linked to the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

However, the Nayiri Palace maintains that Nalerigu remains calm and stable, and therefore should not be subject to such measures.

“The Nayiri Palace has taken grave notice of a communiqué circulating in the public domain announcing the imposition of a curfew while Mamprugu remains firmly committed to constitutional rule. The Palace expresses its deep displeasure and dismay at the arbitrary and unjustified manner in which this curfew has been imposed,” the statement read.

The Palace argued that the decision was made without prior consultation, and stressed that equating Mamprugu’s stability with the volatile situation in Bawku was both misguided and dangerous.

“It is troubling that the government continues to pursue a misguided policy of equating the longstanding conflict in the Bawku Traditional Area with the peace and stability that exists in Mamprugu, particularly in Walewale and now Nalerigu,” the statement added.

The Council further described the government’s explanation—that the curfew was intended to facilitate the evacuation of students—as “unfortunate and unconvincing,” cautioning that such reactive security interventions undermine broader efforts toward peace.

The Palace emphasized that sustaining peace in Mamprugu requires mutual respect and collaboration—not unilateral decisions that exclude local leadership.
