The National Timber Monitoring Team (NTMT) has closed down about 30 sawmill companies in the Asunafo North Municipality for operating without a license.
During operations in Bediako and Mim, Sergeant Charles Sobo told Adom News that intelligence indicated many sawmills in the area were operating illegally, and upon inspection, the team confirmed the claims, leading to the closure of approximately 30 companies.
He explained that because the companies lacked licenses, they do not pay taxes to the government as required by law, which constitutes a serious offence.
Sgt. Sobo added that, under instructions from the National Director of NTMT, Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku, the team assigned to the Ahafo and Bono regions must ensure the companies remain closed until proper registration is completed and taxes are paid.
He warned the affected sawmills not to attempt resuming operations illegally, stressing that NTMT would take strict action against any violations.
