The National Security Coordinating Secretariat (NSCS) has taken firm action in an expanding investigation into illegal mining activities within the Oda River Forest Reserve, dismissing one operative and initiating disciplinary proceedings against two others accused of involvement.
This move follows a major intelligence-led operation conducted on October 23, 2025, by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The raid, which targeted entrenched galamsey networks, led to the arrest of 15 illegal miners and nine additional suspects who falsely claimed to be National Security operatives.
Security officials described the operation as a significant breakthrough in dismantling a well-organized illegal mining ring.
During the raid, officers recovered weapons including a pistol, a pump-action shotgun, and several pairs of handcuffs—evidence of the group’s level of coordination and potential threat.
In response, the NSCS launched an internal audit to verify whether any of those arrested were linked to the agency. The investigation revealed that three of the names matched current or former National Security operatives.
One of them, identified as Issah Yakubu, a temporary operative stationed at the Yapei Axle Weight Station, was confirmed by colleagues to have ties to the illegal mining site.
His appointment has since been revoked, with the National Security Coordinator directing that he be prosecuted if found culpable.
The two other operatives identified are currently under investigation, and authorities say they will face dismissal and prosecution if evidence confirms their involvement.
During the same operation, two suspects were also arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe officers with GH₵120,000 to secure the release of the detained miners.
The failed bribe highlights the lucrative nature of illegal mining and the financial influence that continues to undermine enforcement efforts.
Authorities say the crackdown underscores government’s renewed commitment to combating galamsey and holding all complicit officials accountable, regardless of rank or affiliation.
