The 2025 Overall Best National Farmer, Opanyin Abraham Kwaku Adusei, has urged the government to prioritise irrigation infrastructure to enable farmers to increase food production and sustain Ghana’s agricultural sector.
Speaking on Friday, December 5, after receiving the top honour at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration, the 82-year-old farmer highlighted the potential of vast fertile areas such as the Afram Plains to become Ghana’s major food basket if farmers have reliable access to water for year-round cultivation.
He described irrigation development as “critical to the sustainability of the agriculture sector,” adding that he was encouraged by government’s plan to incorporate irrigation projects into the Feed Ghana Programme.
“This, to me, is a step in the right direction towards achieving the goal of the Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, and Secure the Future agenda,” he said.
Opanyin Adusei also commended President John Dramani Mahama for committing to build a bridge over the Afram River and rehabilitate road networks in the Afram Plains, noting that such interventions would enhance productivity, improve rural economies, create jobs, and transform livelihoods.
The former Eastern Regional Best Farmer (2009) expressed deep appreciation to government for sustaining the tradition of honouring farmers, emphasising that the recognition belongs to all hardworking Ghanaian farmers.
“This distinguished recognition is not mine alone. It belongs equally to the thousands of hardworking Ghanaian farmers, men and women whose sacrifices feed our nation and strengthen our economy. To all of them, I say Ayekoo,” he added.
