Nana Poku Ashis urges Charterhouse to organise national celebration for Daddy Lumba

Nana Poku Ashis, manager of highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena, has called on event organisers Charterhouse to spearhead a national celebration in honour of the late music legend, Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Kwame Dadzie, Ashis proposed that the tribute event be held ahead of the funeral of the Yentie Obiaa hitmaker.

“The iconic Lumba needs a national celebration, and I am urging Charterhouse to lead this campaign,” he said. “Try and put together an event where we will have our stars come and honour the legend. Before his burial, we should do something like that—maybe a Fameye or Kwabena Kwabena performing a Lumba song—just like we see at the Ghana Music Awards. Even if it’s a paid event, I’m sure it’ll be sold out.”

Ashis described Daddy Lumba as one of Ghana’s most revered entertainers and recounted a conversation with a friend who claimed that Lumba was the only musician successive governments “feared.”

“For more than a decade, presidential candidates from the two main political parties were cautious of Lumba. He could be with you today and be with the other party tomorrow, and no one dared touch him. Other artistes did political songs and suffered for it—but not Lumba,” he added.

Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, Daddy Lumba was one of Ghana’s most iconic highlife musicians, with a career spanning over three decades. He released more than 30 albums, including Aben Wɔha, Yentie Obiaa, and Theresa, cementing his place as a household name.

He passed away on July 26, 2025, after a short illness, leaving behind a rich musical legacy set to inspire generations of Ghanaian artistes.
