Namibian President condoles with Ghana over tragic helicopter crash

The President of Namibia, Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has conveyed her heartfelt condolences following the military helicopter crash that occurred in Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The tragic incident claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, three crew members from the Ghana Armed Forces, and other high-ranking government officials.

Also lost in the crash were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East; and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman and former Kumasi Mayor.

The Ghana Armed Forces identified the fallen service members as Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In her condolence message, President Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying:

“It is with great sadness that I received news of the helicopter crash that took the lives of esteemed Ghanaian leaders and brave members of the armed forces. Their deaths are a tragedy not only for Ghana but for the wider African family.”

She extended, on behalf of the Namibian people and government, her sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and the people of Ghana.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah described the deceased as dedicated public servants whose work strengthened their nation and inspired many across the continent. She said their passing leaves a painful void in the leadership fabric of Africa.

Emphasising the historical and diplomatic bonds between Ghana and Namibia, the President reaffirmed Namibia’s solidarity with Ghana during this time of national grief. She hailed the fallen as “great sons and daughters of Africa whose memories will endure.”
