Nalerigu curfew is an unjustifiable punishment – Assembly Member [Audio]

The Assemblyman for Zaari Fong Electoral Area, Fuseini Bukari, has expressed strong opposition to the curfew imposed on the community following the recent killing of two students at Nalerigu Senior High School (SHS).

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Fuseini described the curfew as unfair and counterproductive, arguing that it punishes residents rather than addressing the root causes of the security crisis.

“How can the government ask residents to go into their houses at 2 p.m. and come out at 6 a.m.? An incident happened, and now there is a punishment. So we, the people of Mamprugu, believe that the government wants to punish us for no reason,” he stated.

He also criticised the lack of consultation with key community stakeholders before the curfew was announced, warning that such decisions undermine public cooperation.

According to Mr. Fuseini, the situation in Nalerigu does not warrant a curfew, especially when compared to other areas experiencing more severe unrest.

“The curfew is uncalled for, and it was the same thing that happened in Walewale. There are places with killings and burning of buses, yet no curfew. When you go to Asawase, there were killings and no curfew was imposed; Pusiga, Bolgatanga, and others, but there is no curfew. So we are wondering why we wake up to a curfew one day because of the killing of two students. The perception is that the government does not like us,” he said.

Mr. Fuseini emphasized that residents would only comply if the government engages stakeholders and provides a clear justification.

“We will only comply if they give us an explanation and involve the relevant stakeholders and the chiefs that matter. Not just issue a letter—it will not work just like that.

“There is no fight, and there is no pressure, so the government must take time to investigate and take necessary steps,” he added.
