The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has appealed to the government to urgently release outstanding monthly allowances owed to Assembly Members across the country.

The appeal followed concerns raised at NALAG’s 4th Quarter National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Tyco City Hotel in Sunyani, where members expressed frustration over delayed payments.

According to NALAG, although the government allocated GH₵100 million in the 2025 national budget for Assembly Members’ monthly allowances, only April and May have been disbursed, leaving a backlog of six months from June to November.

NALAG President, Alfred Asiedu Adjei, described the delay as financially crippling for Assembly Members, who continue to serve their communities despite limited resources. The association has called on the Minister for Finance to immediately release the remaining funds to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs for onward payment.

The association also renewed its call for the government to expedite the procurement and distribution of motorbikes to Assembly Members, noting that many operate in large and hard-to-reach areas without adequate logistical support.

“NALAG is actively engaging the highest levels of government regarding this matter,” the statement assured, emphasizing that the welfare of Assembly Members remains a top priority.

The association expressed confidence that the responsible Ministers will act swiftly to safeguard the decentralization agenda and strengthen grassroots governance.
