The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has dismantled a well-known illegal mining hub, popularly called ‘Gangway’, at Aboso in the Western Region.

The hideout, notorious for harboring hardened illegal miners and criminal elements, was raided in a large-scale intelligence-led operation on Monday, October 5, 2025.

During the operation, the task force destroyed several makeshift structures that served as bases for drug activity and other illegal operations in the Prestea-Huni Valley District. Mining equipment used in ongoing galamsey activities was also seized.

Several individuals engaged in illegal mining, gambling, drug use, and narcotics trading surrendered to the authorities. The team also retrieved multiple packs of hard drugs, including eleven parcels of Indian hemp.

NAIMOS had conducted a similar operation in the area in June, warning criminal gangs to vacate the ‘Gangway’ enclave. Despite repeated appeals from local chiefs and residents, illegal activities persisted until this latest intervention.

The recent raid is expected to restore calm to the community and curb the unlawful operations that have plagued the area for years.

In a related development, NAIMOS also carried out an operation along the Daren-Domping corridor in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, where fifteen water-pumping machines, one generator, and three changfans were seized, and several makeshift structures destroyed.

The task force says it will maintain pressure on illegal mining networks in the Western Region and other hotspots as part of the government’s intensified fight against galamsey.
