A NAIMOS taskforce deployed to the Eastern Region has disrupted illegal mining activities at Kwabeng in the Atiwa West District, following an operation carried out on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The operation targeted a site located behind the dormitory of Kwabeng Anglican Senior High School, where illegal miners were actively operating.

During the exercise, the taskforce observed that mined materials were being washed directly into the River Ewusu, leading to significant pollution of the water body.
As part of the operation, three excavators and one pay loader were seized. The machines have since been conveyed to the NAIMOS Secretariat equipment park for safekeeping.

In addition, several heavy-duty water pumping machines, along with other mining equipment and makeshift structures erected at the site, were destroyed.
The taskforce also removed key excavator parts to immobilise other machines that were left behind at the mining location.

The intervention effectively brought a halt to the uncontrolled illegal mining activities in the area and prevented further environmental degradation of the River Ewusu.
Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to protect water bodies and curb illegal mining across the country.
