NAGRAT threatens action over rising violence against teachers

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has announced plans to take action starting June 1, 2025, if the Ghana Education Service (GES) fails to address the increasing threats and violent attacks against teachers in schools across the country.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu underscored the urgency of the situation and called for immediate steps to protect educators who are increasingly vulnerable in their workplaces.

“The first law of nature is self-preservation. If someone can arm himself and attack me, then I should also have the right to come to school armed,” he said.

He emphasized that teachers are ready to take their safety into their own hands if authorities fail to act.

“We will be forced to protect ourselves. We must ensure that no reckless student ends our lives while we are performing our duties,” Carbonu added.

His comments follow a disturbing pattern of recent incidents involving physical assaults and threats made against teachers by students. These cases have sparked national outrage and renewed debate about discipline, safety, and teacher protection in Ghana’s schools.
