The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has raised alarm over the increasing use of sudine, a hazardous chemical reportedly added by some traders to palm oil to enhance its colour.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Carbonu warned that the substance poses serious health risks, including potential damage to the liver, kidneys, and other vital organs.

He criticised the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for weak public education and limited market oversight.

“It is sad. The FDA needs to create more extensions for their officers to move around and ensure market women are doing the right thing. These chemicals can cause kidney, liver, and other damages. Some traders don’t even know the consequences of what they are doing,” he said.

Mr. Carbonu also highlighted the broader issue of food safety awareness, noting that many consumers are unaware of the risks of diseases transmitted from animals to humans.

He called for greater investment in veterinary services, pointing out the sector’s severe understaffing despite its importance to public health.

“We need to take veterinary services seriously in this country. That department alone can employ thousands to keep us safe, yet we have only a handful of government veterinary workers. If we don’t change our mindset, no government can change this country,” he cautioned.
