NACOC warns kebab lovers over suspected drug-laced meat

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has cautioned Ghanaians—particularly kebab lovers—to be vigilant about where they buy their meat, following reports that some vendors are allegedly lacing kebab with marijuana (weed).

This alarming trend was disclosed by NACOC’s Deputy Director, Lawyer Twum Barimah, during an interview on Burning Issues on Adom FM, as part of activities to mark World Drug Day and raise awareness about drug abuse.

Mr. Barimah revealed that the Commission has received reports indicating that some kebab sellers—especially those operating at pubs—are mixing cannabis with the meat they serve.

“I want to especially caution young ladies who accompany their friends to pubs and eat kebab without knowing the source,” he said. “Some of these kebab vendors lace the meat with weed, and after consuming it, your body may start reacting in strange ways—leaving you confused and possibly endangered.”

He described the increasing use of illicit drugs among the youth as a national concern, warning that if the trend continues unchecked, Ghana may face a crisis in the near future with an unreliable youth population.

“We are witnessing an alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. If we don’t take action now, in the next five years, we may not have dependable youth to lead the nation,” he cautioned.

Mr. Barimah assured the public that NACOC is intensifying efforts to curb the spread of illegal drugs in the country. He emphasized that the Commission is focusing on cutting off the supply routes through which these substances enter the system.

“Our core mission is to eliminate illicit drugs from our society. We’re tackling it from the source, because if we can block the supply, we can prevent the abuse,” he concluded.
