The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has directed all teachers in possession of hard copies of the SHS Physical Education & Health teachers’ manual to return them immediately.
The move follows concerns over a controversial definition of gender identity in the manual, which is currently in use in schools.
NaCCA Board Chairman, Prof. Vincent Assanful, confirmed the directive in an interview with Adom News.
He explained that a comprehensive review of the curriculum is underway, covering education from the basic to the secondary level, to ensure it aligns with Ghanaian values while maintaining educational integrity.
The manual defines gender identity as a person’s deeply felt internal experience of gender, which may or may not correspond to the sex assigned at birth.
It also notes that gender may include being male, female, or a blend of both, going beyond a strictly binary concept.
Prof. Assanful assured that the review will not focus solely on the gender identity section, but will take a critical look at the entire manual to ensure clarity and appropriateness.
