My predecessor has questions to answer – Scholarship Secretariat boss

The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Alexander Asafo Agyei, has stated that his predecessor, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, owes Ghanaians an explanation regarding his stewardship.

According to Mr. Agyei, since assuming office in February 2025, he has uncovered several irregularities that require urgent clarification.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam show on Thursday, Mr. Agyei highlighted the Secretariat’s financial challenges and called for accountability.

“The former Registrar is alive, he is an MP, and must answer questions. I cannot be here to answer for someone else’s stewardship. We must ask questions and summon people to respond,” he stated.

Mr. Agyei also raised concerns over scholars who have refused to return to Ghana after completing their studies, despite signing bonds to serve the country.

“The people on scholarships signed a bond to return and serve the country after their studies, but some have refused to come back and are now even threatening demonstrations over unpaid stipends. In the UK alone, we owe £40 million during these difficult times,” he revealed.

In April 2024, there were calls for the interdiction and investigation of Dr. Agyemang, who is currently the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South.

The calls followed an investigative report by The Fourth Estate, which revealed that scholarships meant for needy but brilliant students had been awarded to individuals with political connections.

Responding to criticisms at the time, Dr. Agyemang argued that there is currently no clear criteria for determining who qualifies as a “poor” person, and called for legislation to address the gap.
