My mum told me to quit music – Wendy Shay

-

Ghanaian artiste Wendy Shay has opened up about how online trolling nearly ended her music career.

Describing herself as the most bullied artiste in Ghana, Wendy revealed on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Shopsydoo that she faced heavy backlash from music lovers who believed she was trying to imitate the late Ebony Reigns.

“At a point, my mum asked me to quit music and return to Germany because the trolling was overwhelming and it affected everyone in my family,” she said. “Some of my relatives were even kind of shy to associate with me at the time.”

She explained that she understood their reaction, given how intense the ridicule was.

“Imagine they take your face, edit it to make you look like an old woman, and start mocking and laughing at you. They even said I wasn’t talented enough. It was crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but it built me,” Wendy added.

Despite the challenges, she said she always had people who believed in her and supported her music. Since joining the industry, she has won several awards, including honours at the 3Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards.

Her latest song, It’s Too Late, has been enjoying massive rotation on media platforms and has topped music charts globally.
