Former Ghana head coach Charles Akonnor has ruled out a return to the Black Stars following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is currently searching for a new head coach after Addo was relieved of his duties following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany in March.
Although Akonnor’s name has been mentioned among potential candidates, the former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach has made it clear he is not available for the role at this time.
The 50-year-old says his focus remains firmly on his current position with Kenyan giants Gor Mahia FC, where he is aiming for silverware.
“I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy. I’m doing well. We are fighting for the title, and that is where my focus is, so nothing comes before that,” Akonnor told Flashscore.
He added that while he remains committed to supporting Ghana, a return to the national team setup is not on his agenda for now.
“I was once the coach of the national team. If there’s a link, it’s not anything negative. It’s not anything bad. I’m a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team. I will support them in the World Cup, and that will be it. But for now, my focus is on Gor Mahia,” he added.
Akonnor previously managed the Black Stars between 2020 and 2021.
Meanwhile, the GFA is expected to appoint a new head coach in the coming weeks as preparations intensify for upcoming international friendlies.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Mexico and Wales ahead of their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
