The Ghana Chamber of Mines has officially introduced its new Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, marking a strategic step in its mission to promote sustainable and responsible mining practices in Ghana.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Dr. Ashigbey, who previously worked in the telecommunications sector, reaffirmed his commitment to combating illegal mining and advancing responsible, long-term mining in the country.
“There’s a transition from telecoms to mines, so it’s important to state that both are private member organisations,” he clarified. “The Ghana Chamber of Mines is not a state entity. I have not been appointed with presidential powers from Jubilee House. We work closely with government, policymakers, and regulators—but always in the interest of advancing the mining industry.”
Highlighting the Chamber’s efforts to promote environmentally responsible mining, Dr. Ashigbey stressed the importance of aligning industry goals with sustainability.
“The Chamber stands for responsible, transgenerational mining. It is important that mined areas are restored once work is complete. That has been our historical practice, and it must continue,” he said.
He also noted that Chamber member companies often bear the consequences of irresponsible practices by illegal operators and called for stronger collaboration with civil society in tackling galamsey.
“Our members are often at the receiving end of the impact of illegal mining. So there’s clear alignment between the Chamber’s values and Ghana’s broader sustainability goals,” he stated. “I hope my colleagues in the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey will also step up and share the responsibility.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Ashigbey pledged to strengthen stakeholder engagement and enhance the Chamber’s advocacy for green mining.
“If anything, I hope to improve our sustainable and green mining initiatives, especially by using the Chamber as a platform to deepen our engagement with key stakeholders,” he added.
Dr. Ashigbey assumes office at a time when Ghana continues to face environmental and social challenges associated with illegal mining. His leadership is expected to help reshape the industry toward long-term sustainability.
With a professional background that spans media, telecommunications, infrastructure, and engineering, Dr. Ashigbey brings a wealth of cross-sector experience to the role.
