My client is fine – Lawyer for Adenta Kumi speaks after NIB arrest [Listen]

Clement Opoku Gyamfi, popularly known as Kwame Opoku CID, lawyer counsel for former parliamentary candidate, Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has assured the public that his client is in good condition following his arrest at dawn on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Lawyer Gyamfi said Kumi was picked up around 6:00 a.m. and is currently being held at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office in Kawukudi, Accra.

“My client is okay. From his demeanor and conversation, it is clear he is doing well. We have encouraged him, and from the layman’s point of view, he is holding up,” the lawyer stated.

He added that Kumi was unaware of the reasons for his arrest until he was later interrogated and cautioned.

“He told me he didn’t know his crime. It was during the cautioning that he found out he was being charged with the publication of false news,” Gyamfi revealed.

According to him, investigators claim Kumi had written something on his Twitter account, granted interviews to the media, and submitted a petition to the President—all of which they allege contained false information.

However, the lawyer said his client has denied the allegations.

“They say the content of the petition and his commentary afterward were false, but my client strongly denies that,” Gyamfi stated.

He also spoke about the trauma Kumi’s arrest caused the family, particularly in light of a personal tragedy.

“Kumi’s brother told me that his wife suffered a miscarriage. His brother confirmed it to me during a conversation, and we have every reason to believe it is true,” he said.

Lawyer Gyamfi condemned what he described as a “Rambo-style” approach used in arresting his client.

“The best thing would have been to invite him. That style of arrest is not dignified and only puts families through unnecessary trauma. State security must exercise patience and handle such matters with courtesy,” he said.

He disclosed that a bail application has been filed with the NIB and the investigator handling the case, and they are currently awaiting a response.

The exact reasons for Kumi’s arrest remain unclear, but members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) believe it may be connected to a petition he submitted earlier in the week to the President.

The petition reportedly calls for the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice, citing alleged misconduct by its members.
