Murtala was a force of nature – MP Alhassan Suhuyini pays tribute

Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has paid a moving tribute to the late Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Ibrahim Muhammed, describing him as “a force of nature” whose bold spirit and passion for service left a lasting mark.

Speaking at the funeral ceremony, Suhuyini recalled their shared history dating back to Ghana Secondary School in Tamale, where Murtala’s legacy, known as the “Azayaman,” continued to inspire students long after he had moved on.

Their first personal encounter came during Suhuyini’s days as host of the Diamond FM morning show, where Murtala was a regular panelist known for his unapologetic Pan-African views.

In politics, Suhuyini said their relationship was one of “love, friction, and mutual respect,” with each learning from the other’s contrasting style.

He fondly recounted their final conversation, in which Murtala was assisting some of his constituents with jobs while challenging him to do even more for his people.

“It’s still hard to believe such a vibrant spirit is gone. Rest in power, Senior Brother,” Suhuyini said.

Murtala Muhammed was among the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash. He was buried on August 10 in a ceremony attended by political leaders, family, and hundreds of mourners.
