Murtala was a devout Muslim, a principled statesman – Pusiga MP

The Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba, has honoured the memory of the late Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, describing him as a devout Muslim, a principled statesman, and a dear friend.

Dr. Murtala, celebrated for his dedication and transformative leadership, was among eight people who died when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while heading to Obuasi.

Speaking during the Evening of Reflections and Memorial for the victims, Madam Ayamba fondly recounted moments she shared with him both inside and outside Parliament.

She praised his humility, eloquence, and unwavering faith.

“Mutala was one who would always pat my shoulder and say, ‘Hajia, I have come. With our jokes as playmates, I can confidently say, if for nothing at all, Mutala was a true Muslim—always quoting the Qur’an even on the floor of Parliament and ensuring that he translated it,” she mourned.

She reflected on his sharp intellect and disciplined approach to parliamentary debates, noting how he built arguments on facts and reinforced them with credible references.

“I reflect on the way and manner in which he would present his debates with facts and ensure that he quoted from the necessary references,” she said.

Madam Ayamba also spoke of his humility in public service, an attribute she said was rare in politics.

“I recall the fact that he was someone who would accept whenever he slipped during a submission. He would quickly correct himself and make sure he said it as it is,” she shared.

Since the tragic accident, tributes have continued to pour in for Dr. Murtala Mohammed, whose influence on national development and environmental policy earned him deep respect.

His legacy, Madam Ayamba noted, will live on in the memories of those who worked alongside him and in the progress of the nation he served with passion.
