MTN Ghana has announced a major technical issue that has disrupted its data bundle services, just as new, more generous data offers were set to take effect from July 1, 2025.
In a public notice issued to customers, the telecom giant confirmed that the glitch had affected data bundle purchases and the 15% bonus data announced earlier.
“Whilst implementing the data offer, which will provide 15% additional volume of data from today, July 1, 2025, MTN experienced a major technical issue which has affected data bundle purchases, including the data volume offer,” the company stated.
“As a result, customers are temporarily unable to purchase data bundles.”
MTN apologised for the inconvenience and assured customers that its technical teams were working urgently to resolve the issue.
“We recognise the importance of staying connected and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this may cause. Further updates will be provided,” it added.
The disruption comes on the same day all three major telecom operators—MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana, and AT Ghana—were expected to begin offering significantly improved data bundles at no additional cost, following new directives from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations.
Under the new pricing regime:
-
MTN Ghana, designated as a Significant Market Power (SMP), was to restore its GH¢399 bundle to offer 214GB, up from 92.88GB previously.
-
All of MTN’s data packages were to receive a 15% increase in data volume.
Other operators have successfully rolled out their upgrades:
-
AT Ghana (AirtelTigo) now offers 236GB for GH¢400, up from 195GB.
-
Telecel Ghana has increased its GH¢400 bundle from 90GB to 250GB, alongside a 10% bonus across all bundles.
Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, who unveiled the policy last month, said the changes followed extensive consultations aimed at ensuring better value for consumers.
“The increases are going to come at considerable costs to the network operators. However, I am glad that our engagements and consultations are bearing fruit for the Ghanaian people,” he said at a June 10 press briefing.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has been tasked to enforce compliance, with quarterly billing integrity tests set to begin in Q3 2025 to ensure accurate data crediting and rollover.
Despite MTN’s temporary setback, Telecel and AT Ghana customers continue to enjoy the upgraded bundles without disruption.
Mr George also revealed that the Ministry is engaging the Ministries of Finance and Energy to address sector taxes and utility costs that continue to drive high data prices.
