MTN Ghana has informed its millions of Mobile Money (MoMo) subscribers of an upcoming six-hour service disruption scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The company says the outage, which will run from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., is necessary to carry out a critical system upgrade.
During this period, all MoMo-related services — including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and merchant payments — will be unavailable.
Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer at Mobile Money Limited, explained the move in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM:
“Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 a.m. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable.
“This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding,” he said.
MTN says the upgrade will enhance performance, strengthen security against fraud, and lay the foundation for future digital innovations.
Similar maintenance exercises in the past have led to faster transaction processing and improved reliability.
The telecom giant has assured customers that all accounts will remain secure during the process and that services will resume immediately once the upgrade window closes.
MTN has encouraged users to complete urgent transactions ahead of time to avoid disruption.
In a country where MTN Mobile Money is a dominant financial lifeline for individuals and businesses, the temporary suspension could affect a significant portion of daily economic activity.
The platform processes billions of cedis in transactions each month and plays a central role in promoting financial inclusion.
