Commercial transport operators plying the Ejisu–Onwe stretch in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region have withdrawn their services in protest of poor roads.
On Monday, all the drivers refused to render services to passengers who use the route, leaving many commuters stranded.
Some of the drivers who defied the orders were stopped in the middle of the road and passengers forced to alight.
It took police intervention to restrain them from blocking the road entirely in the course of the protest.
Kofi Agyare, one of the aggrieved drivers said, “we are being forced out of business, plying this road is no longer profitable. Until we take drastic measures, we will not get the road fixed.”
Following the demise of former Member of Parliament for Ejisu Constituency, John Ampontuah Kumah in March 2024, the government made efforts to fix the deplorable road.
The road condition became a subject of interest in the heat of campaigning for a successor for the MP.
Then President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in wrapping up the NPP’s campaign assured of commitment to fix the road but little was done before the end of his term.
The road has further deteriorated, riddled with potholes and dust.
Though some civil works are finished, more will have to be done to make the road motorable.
