Grief has gripped the family of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong after the 20-year-old was killed in a brutal armed robbery attack on the team’s bus on Sunday night.

Frimpong was among players and officials returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex on Sunday night in Samreboi when the attack occurred along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso stretch.

According to reports, armed robbers blocked the road before opening fire on the bus, forcing passengers to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes.

During the chaos, Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In an emotional account, his mother described him as the backbone of the family and the main provider who worked tirelessly to support them and build a better future.

“He means everything to me. He was my firstborn, and we did almost everything together, including making decisions. He is very respectful and avoids conflict, something anyone can testify to. Although he is grown, he always listens whenever I advise or caution him,” she said.

Frimpong, who joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars in January, had featured 13 times in the Ghana Premier League this season, scoring twice.

The incident has shocked Ghana’s football community and renewed concerns about the safety of clubs travelling for domestic matches. The Ghana Football Association is expected to review security arrangements for team movements in the wake of the tragedy.
