The Kumasi Metro Education Director, David Oppong, has revealed that more girls are participating in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the metropolis.

According to him, out of the 9,846 candidates registered, 5,153 (52%) are girls, while 4,693 (48%) are boys.

“We are delighted at the trend, that is aligns with national patterns,” he said.

The exams are being conducted in 35 centers across the metropolis under hygienic conditions.

During a tour with the Kumasi Mayor to some exam centers, David Oppong was excited at the participation of inmates from Kumasi Central Prison’s Reform JHS, indicating that six others set to register for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

“Students with special needs have been given extra time to write their papers, as per WAEC’s recommendations” he noted.

The education director reported that the exams are progressing smoothly without any major incident in the Kumasi Metro.

A total of 120,285 pupils are participating in the ongoing BECE exams at 432 centers in the Ashanti region.
