Ghana’s Ambassador to Morocco, H.E. Charity Gbedawo, has praised the Ministry of Youth and Sports for swiftly resolving the Black Queens’ financial challenges—crediting the intervention as a major factor in the team’s strong comeback at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
After a shaky start to the tournament, the Black Queens bounced back with a commanding 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their final Group C match, securing a spot in the quarterfinals.
Speaking after the match, Ambassador Gbedawo revealed that delays in bonus payments had initially affected team morale. However, quick action by the Sports Ministry—particularly the dispatch of an accounts officer to handle the issue—played a crucial role in lifting the players’ spirits.
“I told you earlier that we were having some challenges with regard to their finance and things. But the Minister for Sports quickly intervened and dispatched the accounting officer to come and sort them out,” she said.
“So, it also boosted their morale, with the little support that the embassy also gave. So, we are not surprised. We are grateful to God that we have made it. And I know that they are going to make Ghana proud.”
Ghana finished second in Group C with four points and will face Algeria in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 19, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.
