Modaso chiefs, assembly member appeal to gov’t to compel contractor to return to site over abandoned ‘death trap’ road

Chiefs and the Assembly Member of Modaso in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region have appealed to the government to compel contractor Chairman Wontumi to resume work on the abandoned Diaso–Modaso–Abenase road, which they describe as a “death trap.”

During a visit by Adom News, the chiefs lamented the devastating impact of the road’s deplorable state on their livelihoods and safety. They revealed that despite several efforts to support the contractor, work on the road has stalled, leaving the community in distress.

The traditional leaders disclosed that the poor condition of the road has led to numerous accidents, including one resident losing a limb, while pregnant women reportedly give birth prematurely due to the rough terrain.

Stephen Fordjour, the Assembly Member for Modaso Electoral Area, noted that most drivers have stopped using the stretch because of frequent vehicle breakdowns. Currently, only motorbikes and tricycles (pragyia) operate on the route, charging passengers exorbitant fares due to the difficult conditions.

He emphasized that the two-mile stretch connects several farming communities engaged in active economic ventures, stressing that repairing the road would significantly improve transportation, trade, and access to healthcare.

Residents are therefore calling on the government to intervene urgently and ensure that Chairman Wontumi’s company returns to site to complete the long-abandoned project.
