The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has lauded the Minority Whips, describing them as the backbone of his leadership and vital to the effective operation of the caucus while in opposition.

He noted that leading the Minority can be demanding and, at times, overwhelming, stressing that a strong and well-coordinated whip team is indispensable to the role.

“In opposition you can be overwhelmed because when you are Minority Leader, the most powerful person, your right-hand man who gets you going, is your Chief Whip,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin singled out Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, for special praise.

“Annoh has done super in terms of his organisation. He and his team,” he remarked, commending his organisational skills and leadership.

He also applauded Habib Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tolon and First Deputy Minority Chief Whip, describing him as a strong advocate who has grown steadily into the role.

“Habib came in first as a deputy whip and went through grooming. For some time, I allowed him to take up procedural issues and you realise that he is very strong in terms of advocacy,” he explained.

The Minority Leader further acknowledged the contribution of Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Second Deputy Minority Whip, describing him as a reliable pillar within the leadership structure.

“The three of them have become my anchormen. Without them you cannot function as a Minority Leader. You need a strong whip who understands. He is like your national security advisor,” he added.

Mr Afenyo-Markin made the remarks during an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026. He emphasised that the Minority’s ability to effectively hold the government accountable depends largely on a disciplined and strategic whip system grounded in parliamentary procedure.
