Minority urges gov’t to resolve nurses’ strike immediately

-

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly criticized the government over its handling of the ongoing strike by nurses and midwives, calling for the immediate implementation of the 2024 Conditions of Service agreement.

In a press statement signed by Frank Asiedu Bekoe, MP for Suhum and Deputy Ranking Member on the Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee, the Minority described the nurses’ action as justified and accused the government of neglecting its responsibilities.

“Our nurses are not on strike over salaries, but for the right to fair and safe working conditions. They are healthcare heroes, not enemies of the state,” the statement said.

The Caucus condemned recent comments by the Health Minister suggesting that leaders of the nurses’ union had fled the country to avoid negotiations, calling them “irresponsible” and “reprehensible.”

The statement highlighted that while nurses continue to be overworked and underappreciated, the Presidency’s compensation budget has ballooned from GH₵327 million in 2024 to GH₵2.7 billion—funds the Minority claims could be redirected to meet the nurses’ demands.

“The government must prioritize essential workers and restore faith in our healthcare system by honouring its commitments without delay,” it added.
