Minority urges Ahafo Cocoa farmers to reject price below GH₵6,000

The Minority Caucus on Food and Agriculture in Parliament has urged cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Region to reject any producer price below GH₵6,000 per bag when the government announces new prices in August.

During a community engagement at Akrodie in the Asunafo North Municipality, Ranking Member on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Dr. Isaac Yaw Opoku, insisted that government must fulfil the GH₵6,000 per bag promise made during the 2024 election campaign.

The Offinso South MP noted that the pledge influenced many cocoa farmers to throw their support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and should not be taken lightly now that the party is in power.

Dr. Opoku said the caucus will continue to engage farmers across the country to reiterate that they deserve nothing less than the promised amount.

Some farmers present at the meeting expressed disappointment at the possibility of a lower price, warning that they may hoard their produce if the government fails to meet their expectations. They specifically mentioned Agriculture Minister Dr. Eric Opoku, stressing that they would feel betrayed if he fails to deliver after his strong advocacy on cocoa prices while in opposition.

The farmers say they are prepared to resist any attempts to shortchange them in the upcoming announcement.
