The recent reduction of cocoa prices is significantly affecting farmers across Ghana.

During a visit to cocoa farmers in the Tano North, Asutifi North, and Asutifi South districts of the Ahafo Region, Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh, warned that if the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, does not address farmers’ concerns over the price cut, the minority will seek the intervention of the Asantehene.

“This action aims to alleviate the hardships farmers are facing due to the price reduction and outstanding payments,” Mr. Dompreh said. He added that if the government ignores the petition to the Asantehene, it will be clear that the administration does not genuinely care for cocoa farmers, despite claims made during the 2024 election campaign.

The Minority Chief Whip further criticized President Mahama, stating that although he is an experienced leader, he has failed in managing cocoa affairs and must acknowledge this shortcoming.

Aggrieved cocoa farmers Lydia Kyeremeh and Keep Adu told Adom News that the price reduction and unpaid deliveries have caused severe financial challenges. They noted that the situation is affecting their ability to support their school-going children, particularly those in tertiary institutions, and called on opinion leaders to oppose the government’s decision.

Mr. Dompreh stressed that the minority caucus would continue to exert maximum pressure on the government to revise its decision and ensure farmers are promptly paid.
