Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, have received a GH₵100,000 cash reward from the Minority in Parliament for their outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they secured a third-place finish.

The presentation took place on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the team and their technical staff to Parliament.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin handed over the amount in physical cash, describing it as a gesture of appreciation and motivation for the squad.

In his address, Afenyo-Markin lauded the Queens for their resilience and historic run in the tournament, especially their semi-final appearance — a milestone they hadn’t reached since 2016.

Returning to the WAFCON stage for the first time since 2018, the Black Queens had a rocky start, losing to South Africa and drawing with Mali. However, a decisive victory in their final group match saw them progress to the knockout stage.

Ghana overcame Algeria in the quarterfinals after a tense penalty shootout but fell short of a finals berth following a defeat to host nation Morocco.

In the third-place playoff, the Queens emerged victorious once again on penalties, edging out South Africa 4-3 to clinch the bronze medal.
