Minority demands urgent government action on Volta Lake transport safety

-

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for urgent government action to improve safety on the Volta Lake following the boat disaster near Kete Krachi that claimed 15 lives on October 11, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Ranking Member on the Roads and Transportation Committee, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, the Caucus expressed condolences to the affected families and described the repeated accidents on the Volta Lake as unacceptable.

The Minority recalled that in 2020, the government secured a $150 million facility from the Korean Exim Bank to fund the installation of modern inland water transport equipment and floating pontoons under the Volta Lake Transport Limited project.

They noted that feasibility studies by Vision Consult had already been completed and provided a clear roadmap for implementation.

The Caucus urged the government to prioritize the project and ensure immediate disbursement of funds to prevent further loss of lives.

It also called on the Ghana Maritime Authority to enforce strict regulations on vessel registration and loading to curb overloading on the lake.

They emphasized that the Volta Lake is a vital national resource relied upon by about two million Ghanaians and must be made safe for all users.
