Minority condemns removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo

Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo

The Minority in Parliament has expressed outrage over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, describing the move as a direct assault on Ghana’s judiciary.

In a statement signed by John Darko, Member of Parliament for Suame and Legal Counsel to the Minority Caucus, the group accused the president of deliberately undermining the independence of state institutions for political gain.

According to the Minority, the dismissal of the Chief Justice forms part of a “grand agenda” by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to weaken key democratic institutions, citing campaign remarks by NDC leaders about the removal of Justice Torkornoo and the Electoral Commission chair.

“This is nothing short of a judicial coup clothed in flawed constitutional procedures,” the statement read.

They cautioned that the president’s action undermines Ghana’s democratic progress and aligns the country with nations where chief justices have been politically targeted.

The Minority urged traditional leaders, the clergy, the media, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to rise and condemn what they called an unconstitutional and dangerous precedent.
