The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Sammy Awuku, has disclosed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) threatened to walk out of the meeting on political vigilantism thrice.
The two major political parties, the NDC and NPP have emphasised the need to stop the activities of political vigilante groups in the country and therefore met on April 9, 2019 to agree on measures to take to end vigilantism in Ghana.
Giving an account of the meeting, Mr Awuku said the claim by the NDC that the NPP’s posture didn’t show the party wanted to talk about the issue was untrue.

According to the politician, it took the intervention of the panel of the meeting to stop the NDC from walking out of the meeting on countless occasions.
“When we came back from break, the NDC General Secretary took his file and told the chairman that they will be unable to continue with the meeting because the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has called their national chairman. One of the panel members intervened and asked them to tell the CID they will be there after the meeting.
“John Boadu then asked them when the CID asked them to come and see him and we were told the day before the meeting. My point is they had an excuse to tell the CID the day before the meeting, but couldn’t find any excuse the day when we were supposed to meet as political parties to talk about vigilantism, so with their posture and our posture which of us acted as if we didn’t want to talk about the issue?” he asked.

President Nana Akufo-Addo during his 2019 State of the Nation Address called on the leadership of the two leading political parties to meet and find a lasting solution to political vigilantism.
This followed the chaos that characterised the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election where the government was accused of engaging in State-sponsored political violence.
President Akufo-Addo also said he would consider legislation to end political vigilantism if the dialogue failed to yield any positive result.
