The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has announced the introduction of a six-week basic military orientation programme for National Service personnel, set to begin on August 31, 2025.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 8, Mr. Opare Addo explained that the initiative is designed to instil discipline, national pride, and physical readiness among service personnel, while equipping them with leadership skills applicable to both public and private sector roles.
He stressed that the programme is not intended to militarise the youth but rather to promote citizenship, responsibility, and character development through a structured intervention.
“This orientation is part of our broader goal to prepare young graduates to contribute meaningfully to national development,” he noted.
The initiative, he said, is in line with a directive from President John Dramani Mahama and is backed by the National Service Authority (NSA) Act, Act 1119, as well as the National Service Policy.
The NSA will collaborate with the Ghana Armed Forces to implement the programme, beginning with two pilot cohorts of 10,000 participants each. The initiative is expected to eventually scale up to cover 100,000 personnel annually.
“This is a remarkable step forward. The first cohorts begin on August 31, 2025, and in the coming years, the programme will be expanded to cover all 100,000 personnel annually,” the Minister added.
