Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has called on the Black Stars to approach their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with focus and caution, urging the team to take each match as it comes.

The four-time African champions will be making their fifth appearance at the tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, Essien—who featured at the 2006 and 2014 World Cups in Germany and Brazil—acknowledged the difficulty of the group but stressed the importance of consistency and determination.

“That’s a tough group. But there are always tough games to play, and it’s up to you to win them,” the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner said.

He added that the team must remain focused throughout the competition.

“They should take every game as it comes and do their best. It’s a tournament – anything can happen. You just have to make sure you win your games and keep moving. Let’s see what they can do,” Essien added.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23, and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
